45 Things About my Black Labrador Retriever Cybil aka Bibbette aka Miss Bibs aka Damnit Cybil aka Best Dog Ever.

Cybil was born on Groundhogs Day (February 2) in 2000, in Princeton Ontario.

We got her on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). She was 6 weeks old.

When ever we get home from being out somewhere I can always count on seeing a bright pink tongue looking out the window at us — if its dark in the house because of her colouring (black lab) all we can see it her tongue.

She is the best kid dog ever. They have always been able to climb on her and poke at her and all she does is wag her tail.

She’s my rock when Michael’s away on a canoe trip or whatever. If I hear a noise I don’t worry about it unless she barks.

In 2004 our house was broken into, she didn’t stop the burglars, in fact she was so afraid she peed on the carpet.

Every morning when the kids go to school she stands by the door and sees them off. When they come home she greets them at the door.

She likes to play in the hose and when she was a puppy she had her own kiddie pool.

She hates the bath.

She’s a Labrador Retriever who cannot swim (which is why we stopped taking her in the canoe).

She is loyal, loving and sweet.

She’s a bull in a china shop, but she wouldn’t hurt a fly.

When I took her to puppy classes she and I graduated with honours … 97%. We got 2nd place. We would have had first place but there was an Irish Setter who wouldn’t stop pestering her through the entire exam and the last time it tried to sit on her so she moved from her stay position.

Her best friend is a cat named Milo. When we got Cybil she was ½ the size of Milo and now she outweighs him by 70lbs.

Her favourite K9 companion is Bessie.

If she wants to be petted she will nudge my hand with her nose.

She always lays by my feet. If I’m at my desk, she’s beside me; if I’m in the living room, she’s there too.

She can hear a piece of food the size of a pin head drop in her dish and will wake from a deep sleep just to eat it.

When she was a puppy I would take her to work with me … funny now that I work from home I guess I take her to work with me again.

When we used to take her hiking she’d carry her own backpack.

She is obedient, but can be silly and defiant.

When she is excited she “scooches” (runs funny).

She has soft ears and huge paws.

She gets upset when we take her collar off.

She is clumsy … just like me.

When I was pregnant she always knew and would nuzzle my belly.

When we would introduce her to the newborn babies she would sniff them and gently kiss them with the very tiny tip of her giant tongue.

She wasn’t my first choice in the litter, but the little male yellow lab I wanted was already spoken for. I’m so glad Fate put us together.

Michael named her. My sister spells her name Sibble.

She has always worn a burgundy collar.

She has never eaten or destroyed any of my knitting.

She bites her bed/blanket with her front teeth in a weird little manner, but has never ruined it. She also sucks on her blanket.

Sometimes she watches tv.

She trained our neighbours to give her dog cookies. When we first moved in we gave them some dog cookies so she’d get to know them (over the fence) and ever since then whenever she sees them she goes to the fence and they give her a cookie.

When she was younger she would run with Michael while he went rollerblading.

She loves to ride in the car.

Last summer she jumped into our pool. We didn’t think she could. I guess we were wrong.

She is afraid of the vacuum.

She has run away from home 4 or 5 times in her lifetime. One time she went to the local pub.

Did I mention she likes beer?

She is happy every day … oh to have a life with no worries or concerns.

We could put a steak in front of her nose, tell her no, and she won’t touch it … ever.

We could put a steak in front of her nose, forget to tell her no, and she’ll eat the whole thing.

Cybil likes to go camping.

On Friday February 20, 2008, around 3:20pm Cybil died of natural causes. She died happy and peacefully. She was nine years, eighteen days old.

Rest in peace old friend.

  12. I am so sorry. You wrote a beautiful tribute to her. I have tears in my eyes.

Even though it was natural causes, I know that it stings a bit to lose a dog at the relatively young age of 9. I went through that a couple of years ago. I’m glad to hear that she was happy and peaceful at the end.
